Two economic leaders have resigned from Trump`s advisory boards in protest at his decision to step down. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX, resigned from the two presidential councils where he sat. Musk said: “Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or for the world. Under the provisions of the Paris Agreement, November 4, 2019 is the earliest date when the Trump administration can formally apply to withdraw from the agreement. This would come into effect exactly one year later, the day after the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Several tech executives – including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft president and legal director Brad Smith, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt – condemned the decision. Microsoft`s Satya Nadella stated that Microsoft believes that “climate change is an urgent issue that requires global action.” Google`s Sundar Pichai tweeted: “Disappointed with today`s decision.
Google will continue to work hard for a cleaner and more prosperous future for all. Facebook`s Mark Zuckerberg said: “The exit from the Paris climate agreement is bad for the environment, bad for the economy and threatening the future of our children. The United States will formally withdraw from the Paris climate accord on Wednesday, three years after President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw the country from participation in the Global Forum on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. According to an article by Bartees Cox, director of communications at Groundswell in 2018, blacks live more often than whites near landfills and industrial facilities. In addition, more than half of the 9 million people currently living near hazardous landfills are people of color. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that blacks die three times more often than whites when exposed to air pollutants. Yet the Trump administration has pushed forward its decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement. “The ue-Green agreement and the commitments of China, Japan and South Korea on CO2 emissions neutrality indicate the inevitability of our collective transition from fossil fuels,” said Laurence Tubiana, one of the architects of the Paris Agreement and now executive director of the European Climate Foundation. No country was able to denounce the withdrawal of the agreement before the expiry of a three-year period from the date of ratification. Under Article 28 of the Paris Agreement, the United States could not file its letter of intent to withdraw by November 4, 2019, three years after the agreement came into force, until one year later. Until the withdrawal takes effect, the United States may be required to meet its obligations under the agreement, including the obligation to continue notifying the United Nations of its emissions.
According to a HuffPost memo written by the U.S. State Department`s Legal Department, “attempts to withdraw from the Paris Agreement outside the withdrawal provisions described above would be inconsistent with international law and would not be accepted internationally.” President Trump`s withdrawal officially came into effect the day after election day in the United States.
