With over 10,000 rose bushes spanning approximately 650 varieties, the Garden is a sight to behold, especially from April through October, when the roses are in full bloom. The International Rose Test Garden, the oldest of its kind in continuous operation in the United States, serves a unique purpose – it’s a rigorous testing ground for new rose varieties. These specimens, sent from rose cultivators worldwide, are put through a comprehensive evaluation process. Experts analyze the roses for multiple characteristics, including resistance to disease, the formation of blooms, color, and fragrance. This process ensures that only the most exceptional roses make it to commercial availability.
Approximately 10 to 20 varieties are replaced each year, making way for some of the best new roses to be introduced to the market. Despite this regular turnover, the majority of roses visitors see in the Garden can be purchased commercially, making it a fantastic resource for rose enthusiasts looking for their next garden addition.
